PHILADELPHIA— Today, the Department of Commerce announces the release of two inaugural impact studies highlighting the billion-dollar impact of Philadelphia’s nighttime and music economies. These studies provide in-depth, data-driven analyses of the city’s economic activity occurring between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The findings from 2022-2024 data are available online by clicking here.

“These impact studies make it clear: Philadelphia’s nighttime and music economies are vital to our city’s economic growth, job creation, and overall quality of life,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “As we enter the busy summer season, with residents, businesses, and visitors engaging in late-night activities, this data offers valuable insights to guide our ongoing initiatives. Philadelphia Nighttime Economy Impact Study

This Philadelphia Nighttime Economy Impact Study marks the first comprehensive evaluation of Philadelphia’s nighttime economy, examining a broad range of sectors including hospitality, arts, culture, sports, manufacturing and essential services. Key findings include:

  • Economic Output: An estimated $26.1 billion in total annual economic output in Philadelphia.
  • Local Job: Approximately 132,000 jobs supported, generating $9 billion in wages for local workers.
  • Tax Revenue: $358.8 million in annual tax revenue for the City of Philadelphia and $570.2 million for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

We are pleased to now have a clearer understanding of where we are today, and that these studies can be a vehicle guiding us as we chart the path forward— supported by ongoing, real-time data and analysis.”

Philadelphia Music Industry Economic Impact Study

The Philadelphia Music Industry Economic Impact Study was developed in response to recommendations from the Philadelphia Music Industry Taskforce and assesses the economic footprint of the city’s diverse music sector. Key findings include:

  • Economic Output: An annual economic impact of $6.1 billion within Philadelphia and $6.6 billion statewide.
  • Local Job: Support for over 31,000 jobs, resulting in $1.4 billion in wages.
  • Tax Revenue: Generates $64 million in local tax revenue and $121 million statewide.

The Department of Commerce will use these findings to inform strategic planning, guide policy discussions, and support initiatives that ensure the continued growth and vibrancy of Philadelphia’s cultural and economic landscape. These impact studies are developed by Econsult Solutions and commissioned by the Department of Commerce in partnership with Visit Philadelphia.
