Streets Commissioner, Kristin Del Rossi, announced today that the Pine Road Bridge, located between Shady Lane and Bloomfield Avenue, will be closed to traffic on Monday, March 18, 2024, weather permitting. The bridge closure is expected to be in place until the end of 2024 to allow for the reconstruction of the existing bridge. Electronic message boards will be installed in advance of the bridge closure to alert the traveling public.

Pennypack Trail will remain open during construction and the public will have access to the trail. The trail parking lot will also remain open but can only be accessed from the south side (Shady Lane) of the bridge. Detour signs will be posted to direct travelers around the worksite, as follows:

  • Traffic will be redirected from Pine Road, using Bloomfield Avenue, to Verree Road, onto Rhawn Street, and back to Pine Road.

The project involves the demolition and removal of the existing concrete bridge deck and masonry barrier, the construction of a new concrete bridge deck, masonry barrier and the steel girders, as well as rehabilitation work on the bridge substructure, utilities relocation, roadway approach work, pedestrian crossing installation including ADA-compliant curb ramps, sidewalk, bump outs, and a rapid flashing beacon; roadway resurfacing and pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.

Work will be performed by the bridge contractor Loftus Construction Inc. Pine Road Bridge is expected to be reopened by the December of 2024. The value of the construction contract is $4.3M and is being funded using a combination of State Act 13, ARLE and City Capital funds.

The Streets Department thanks the citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase.
