PHILADELPHIA—Earlier today, out of an abundance of caution, the Health Department issued a warning to stay inside to residents of the Hunting Park neighborhood in response to heavy smoke from a fire on the 500 block of West Annsbury Street. The Health Department dispatched inspectors to the fire to collect samples to test the air for hazardous substances. The results of these tests are pending and will be released when available.

The fire was placed under control by the Philadelphia Fire Department earlier this afternoon and an All Clear was issued. As a result, the Health Department is lifting the recommendation for those in the vicinity of the fire to stay inside and close their windows.

However, residents in the area who are normally affected by poor air quality, like children, elderly people, people who are pregnant, and those with respiratory diseases or heart conditions should continue to be aware of the air quality in their immediate vicinity. If they are having difficulty breathing or there is visible smoke, they should avoid going outdoors, avoid excessive activity, consider wearing a mask, and close their windows.

People with underlying illnesses should monitor for symptoms, including trouble breathing, nausea, and dizziness. If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

The Health Department and the Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor the air quality and provide updates as they become available.
