The PennPraxis Neighborhood Preservation Toolkit is a new, free resource to help you take action to support historic preservation in your section of the city.

The toolkit touches on traditional forms of building preservation and includes tools for neighborhood engagement, supporting small businesses, and celebrating neighborhood histories, all of which are a part of neighborhood preservation.

In the Neighborhood Preservation toolkit you can learn more about:

  1. Tips for caring for an older home
  2. How to improve and maintain design quality and character
  3. Ways to strengthen and sustain small businesses and commercial corridors
  4. Strategies to learn about and share the history of your neighborhood
  5. The best ways to create change and influence policy in your neighborhood
  6. “Who’s who” and who to contact in your neighborhood about historical preservation

Each section includes background on each topic, frequently asked questions, and guided activities so residents can have a step by step guide of what they can do. There are also take action steps that you and your community can work on together, a resources section to learn more, and stories of preservation wins that demonstrate where these strategies have worked in Philadelphia.

Who is it for?
This toolkit can be used by anyone in your community: homeowners, renters, business owners, developers, and neighbors of all ages and education levels.

Where can you access the toolkit?
The toolkit is available on PHLPreservation.org, the website of the Historic Preservation Task Force. The Toolkit is published in English, Chinese, and Spanish, and is available for download as the full version or as individual chapters.
