Farm Philly’s 2019 Community Propagation Program (CPP) is off to a great start! Propagation is the process of growing new plants from seeds or cuttings. CPP operates out of the greenhouses at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center. This is the perfect place to start new plants. Philadelphia residents, community gardens, and organizations are welcome to join the program. Growers have access to:

  • a heated greenhouse space
  • potting soil
  • up to three tables
  • daily watering by staff.

The program is an important resource for all types of growers. It’s very helpful for those who don’t have the space or resources to build a greenhouse or hoop house of their own.

This year we have 62 participants from across the city, including:

  • home gardeners growing for their personal gardens
  • 10 community gardens
  • 13 organizations

Nyambi Royster of Nyambi Naturals has been growing in the greenhouse for three years. “It’s so awesome… my hoophouse is in bad shape.” She enjoys the collaboration and skill-sharing that happens in the greenhouse. “It’s another example of community gardening,” she said, adding, “I want more people to know about it.”

CPP participant Nyambi Royster inspects her seedlings.

This year, CPP will add educational sessions, including seed swaps and workshops led by participants.

CPP would like to thank the Horticulture Center staff, Parks & Rec’s Concessions team, and Fairmount Park Conservancy. We appreciate their contributions in building such an impactful program.
