What we do
The Department of Sanitation manages the City’s solid waste management system. The system includes trash and recycling collection and waste disposal.
We also clean illegal dumping sites and dispose of:
- Abandoned tires.
- Bulk items.
- Household hazardous waste.
Every year, the Department of Sanitation:
- Collects over 610,000 tons of trash.
- Collects over 80,000 tons of recycling.
- Mechanically cleans 410,000 miles of streets.
- Services over 510,000 households.
We also manage community outreach efforts to encourage recycling and reduce litter. To learn more about how we help keep Philadelphia clean and green, see our programs.

Sanitation Collections Update for the Week of February 1, 2026
- Regular trash and recycling collections resume. Residents should set materials out on normal collection day.
-
There will be no collections in rear driveways for the week. Residents are instructed to set materials out in front of their homes for pickup during the week of February 1. Icy driveways can hinder trash compactors mobility.
-
Second trash collection in areas of the city that normally receive it resumes.
-
Residents should expect collection delays as crews navigate through the snow and ice.
-
Residents who are unable to hold their materials can drop them off at one of the City’s six Sanitation Convenience Centers open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. See a list of locations.
