About

The goal of the North Philadelphia School Slow Zones program is to create safer, more livable neighborhoods by reducing residential traffic speeds. The program focuses on areas where people live, work, and play and seeks to improve safety for road users of all ages and abilities. Our team works with communities to co-design traffic solutions that address their needs.

The City has funding to build slow zones around six schools near Vision Zero High Injury Network corridors in North Philadelphia. Over the past five years, 14 people died and 51 were seriously injured in traffic crashes near these schools, including 17 children.

Timeline

2023

The U.S. Department of Transportation awards Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) funding in the fall of 2023.

2025

The City engages schools and community stakeholders to develop a conceptual design for each school slow zone.

2026

The City works with schools and community stakeholders to finalize the design and develops engineering plans for each school slow zone.

2027

Construction is anticipated to begin on school slow zones.
