Philadelphia – Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell, Councilman Bobby Henon and community members participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning at American Legion Playground in Northeast Philadelphia to celebrate the completion of recent renovations.
“I applaud Councilman Henon’s dedication to parks and recreation facilities, and of course the community here in Northeast Philadelphia,” said Commissioner Ott Lovell. “The improvements at American Legion will be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. I’m looking forward to opening parks just like this across the city very soon.”
The outdated play structures at American Legion were replaced with new, state of the art equipment and safety surfacing. An adult fitness area was created and the main play area was divided into two zones, one for tots and another for juniors. American Legion playground was also designed to be inclusive, with an ADA accessible swing and inviting colors.
“This project, which began in 2014, has been a labor of love for this community. Neighbors, community leaders and the Advisory Council worked closely with my office and Parks and Recreation to design an exciting new playspace for kids and families,” said Councilman Henon. “I am looking forward to seeing this playground and basketball court be used more and more now that it is renovated. I want to thank Parks and Recreation, Capital Projects and Public Property for their incredible work on American Legion Playground.”
Improvements to American Legion were made possible through a collaboration between Councilman Henon’s office and the Department of Public Property. The total cost of the project was more than $280,000.
