PHILADELPHIA – The Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) announces its schedules for Performances in Public Spaces and Culture on Tap, OACCE’s neighborhood and performing arts programming. As part of OACCE’s Arts in Action program, these two series present free cultural programming in neighborhoods across the city to increase for Philadelphians of all ages. Starting with the launch of Culture on Tap on June 29 and continuing through the end of October, OACCE will present 49 events and performances from 29 artists and organizations across the city.

“From Rock and Reggae in the courtyard, to jazz in Olney, to children’s theater in Fairmount Park, these performances are taking the experiences out of the theaters and arts institutions and into neighborhoods and outdoor spaces,” explains Mayor Jim Kenney. “This is a great chance for Philadelphians to spend the summer exploring the city and discovering artists and organizations.”

The summer of performances will kick off on June 29, when Project Capoeira performs for the first Culture on Tap in the City Hall Courtyard. Presented with Parks on Tap, a partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Fairmount Park Conservancy and Avram Hornik of FCM Hospitality, Culture on Tap brings the Parks on Tap mobile beer garden and popular food trucks to the courtyard every Thursday in July and August, and presents musical artists ranging from world music to drumline to indie folk music along the backdrop of City Hall. The beer garden will be open 4-9pm, with an hour-long performance starting at 6pm.

On July 1, OACCE will begin its season of free neighborhood programming and kick off Performances in Public Spaces with 10 performances in 10 neighborhoods, starting at noon, and will run through October. Performances in Public Spaces is OACCE’s neighborhood-based performance series, and showcases high quality performers and artists in outdoor, community spaces. In past years, performances have included Shakespeare-in-the-Park, circus theatre, and hip-hop dance, flamenco dancing, and more. New artists for this year include Americana Folk Band Sweetbriar Rose performing at Headhouse Shambles, Cinema Ray, which will present live music to a silent film in Campbell Square Park, and a family-friendly production from Walnut Street Theatre at Smith Memorial Playground.

Performances in Public Spaces is a great way to see excellent free performances and enjoy our parks and open spaces in a whole new way,” says the City’s Managing Director, Michael DiBerardinis.

In addition to bringing performances and other cultural events to neighborhoods throughout the city, these performances also support local artists and performing arts organizations of all sizes and skill levels to share their work with new audiences. “Both Culture on Tap and Performances in Public Spaces are major opportunities for OACCE to support Philadelphia’s local performing arts community,” says Chief Cultural Officer Kelly Lee. “With such a large and vibrant community, we are excited to have 19 new artists and organizations on the schedule this year, and to continue to engage new artists and organizations to participate. We hope the series will give Philadelphians a reason to get out and enjoy many of the city’s diverse neighborhoods.”
