WHAT:
City Representative Sheila Hess will honor native Philadelphian and award-winning children’s book illustrator and writer Jerry Pinkney with a tribute on behalf of the City of Philadelphia to kick off “Jerry Pinkney Day” celebrations throughout the city. In 2016, Mr. Pinkney was honored by the American Library Association with two prestigious lifetime achievement awards, the 2016 Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, which recognizes an African-American author or illustrator for their work for young readers, and the 2016 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, honoring an author or illustrator whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.
Mr. Pinkney will also be presented with a specially designed book of illustrations, inspired by Mr. Pinkney’s own work that has been created by children, who are currently participating in the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Summer Art Camp at Wissinoming Park.
Television crews and photographers are invited to cover the event. There will be a designated media area in the middle aisle of the Mayor’s reception room.
