City of Philadelphia Kicks Off 2016 Philadelphia International Cycling Classic
PHILADELPHIA – Today, the City kicked off the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, which will feature both a men’s race and a women’s WorldTour event. The races will begin Sunday, June 5th at 8am, with the Men’s UCI 1.1 Race lining up at the top of the Manayunk Wall, the most historic climb in U.S. cycling. The Women’s WorldTour Race is slated to kick off at 12:30pm.
“I’m proud to welcome back the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic to the City this year, as it is a key component of a thriving landscape in Philadelphia for fun, safe and exciting events, said Mayor Kenney. “I encourage residents and spectators of the race to come enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and cheer for the pros.”
The Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, in the past known as the Philly Bike Race, is the largest international event in the City of Philadelphia and will attract hundreds of professional cyclists from 36 countries to the City. The event is rain or shine.
Both races will livestream on multiple websites beginning at 7:30 a.m. A full schedule and links to the livestream will be available on the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic website.
While the start/finish line will remain at the top of the Manayunk Wall on Lyceum Avenue between Manayunk Avenue and Pechin Street, the 2016 Philadelphia International Cycling Classic Race Expo will be located at iconic Lemon Hill. Lemon Hill provides race fans with fantastic views of the always-exciting climb from Kelly Drive into Fairmount Park, and a large video screen will ensure that event-goers do not miss a moment of the action. In addition to the Expo moving to Lemon Hill, Volkswagen of America, the official vehicle of the 2016 PICC, will serve coffee and waffles between 8 a.m. to12 p.m., offer cell phone charging stations, and provide giveaways throughout the day. Sly Fox Brewing Company will host a beer garden on Lemon Hill starting at 11 a.m. BEN-FM and 102.9 WMGK Classic Rock will be on site with live music and concert ticket giveaways.
