ACCT Philly to Undergo Kennel HVAC Renovation
Shelter launches “Home Improvement” dog adoption campaign
(Philadelphia, PA) February 1, 2017 – The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT Philly) announced today that the heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) system in the dog kennels will undergo a major renovation starting February 6th, 2017. The project will replace the entire HVAC system, providing a desperately needed update to the unreliable and under-performing model currently in place. Construction is expected to last two months.
“The new system will provide better climate control and a higher air exchange rate, ensuring pets housed at ACCT Philly will have a more comfortable and healthy environment,” said Vincent Medley, ACCT Philly’s executive director. “We are very grateful for the City’s support in making this project a reality.”
Because construction will happen in the ceiling, kennels normally occupied must be left empty during active construction. This will reduce the shelter’s large dog capacity from approximately 100 dogs to 50 dogs.
“As always, our absolute top priority is to minimize euthanasia and maximize lifesaving,” said Carolyn Fitzgerald, ACCT Philly’s lifesaving director. “We have a plan in place designed to increase live exits and decrease the number of dogs coming in. We are asking for the public’s help by adopting and volunteering, and encouraging the same from friends, loved ones, social media circles, and coworkers.”
ACCT Philly’s plan to manage dog population includes an aggressive “Home Improvement” adoption campaign, incentives for rescues that transfer dogs into their organizations, reconfiguring and maximizing available space, reaching out to local shelters for assistance, and preventing dog surrenders.
The first “Home Improvement” adoption promotion kicks-off Wednesday, February 1st and offers fee-waived adult dogs over thirty pounds until February 5th. Upcoming adoption specials will be announced on ACCT Philly’s website.
