An Open Letter to All My Fellow Pets Regarding National Pet Preparedness Month
by Rox Phillips (often seen with Sam Phillips, Director, Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management)
Dear Pet Pals,
Woof! My name is Rox Phillips. My Human is all about disasters…..and me! Human loves me so much. Other than taking me for walks, taking me on some fun road trips in the people mover, and giving me lots of love, Human spends a lot of her time helping people and pets get prepared for emergencies. As you can imagine, we talk about emergencies…a lot.
Because of Human’s work, sometimes when emergencies happen, I get to go to the dog hotel when Human goes to work. It’s so fun! Other times I go to grandma’s house. That’s even funner because my girlfriend Ella lives there! Ella is a Bluetick Coonhound. She’s so pretty. Sometimes I think I like Ella more than she likes me, but she always lets me go on walks with her and shares her toys with me. Wherever you go, it’s important to have a plan. Who are your best pup-pals you’d want to stay with during emergencies? Human told me that shelters which the city opens during emergencies lets dogs like me stay there. They have cages, food, and other things to keep pets safe. That sounds like fun too.
Do you have favorite things? I do! Favorite toys; my favorite tennis ball, my favorite leash, my favorite treats and snacks, even some medicine, which isn’t really my favorite, but really important. Human helped me make sure I have all of my favorite things in a bag that she can easily take with us during an emergency. Human calls it my dog Go Bag. It’s like hers only filled with my things! It’s bright yellow and easy for me to see so I will never forget it. I like it so much…I’ve even been caught napping with it! Human takes a lot of picture of me.
I think she puts them on DogBook.
These are just a few examples of how I am pup-prepared. Dogs don’t use computers, but your human can visit the internet to learn more about how to make sure you are ready.
See you at the dog park!
