The Department of the Engineer of the Centennial Grounds was organized on 1 January 1874 and consisted of a Chief Engineer, two Assistant Engineers and several helpers. This department was responsible for laying out the grounds of the Exhibition, for design and construction of the permanent Exhibition buildings, and for oversight of the construction of the other Exhibitions buildings. Most of the landscaping work also came under its jurisdiction.
