Project Status: Design
This project will improve safety for people walking on Frankford Avenue by constructing bumpouts at key intersections, implementing raised midblock crosswalks with rapid rectangular flashing beacons and center medians, and installing pedestrian scale lighting.
This project utilizes recommendations identified in the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s (DVRPC’s) Frankford Avenue Multimodal Study to improve the pedestrian experience. Data including traffic crashes and rate of pedestrian trips helped inform the project design, locations, and improvements. Intersections with traffic signals are receiving sidewalk bumpouts to reduce crossing distances. Midblock crossings will have bumpouts in addition to raised crosswalks, concrete median islands, and rapid rectangular flashing beacons. To further improve visibility and safety, pedestrian scale street lighting will be installed along the full project corridor. Please note, this project does not include the intersection of Frankford and Cottman avenues. This intersection is part of a separate improvement project led by PennDOT.
