Project Status: Construction
This project will improve safety and mobility for people biking and walking along the Cobbs Creek Trail and Island Avenue. Starting at the current end of the Cobbs Creek Trail, a new sidewalk bumpout on Woodland Avenue near the Blue Bell Tavern will slow turning vehicles, improve visibility, and shorten the crossing distance. Then, a new 10-foot asphalt sidepath will replace the narrow sidewalk along the west side of Island Avenue from Woodland Avenue south to Glenmore Avenue. There it will connect with another future trail project as well as the existing wider sidewalk along Island Avenue toward Elmwood.
Trail Expansion
This project will add 0.3 miles of new trail. Expanding both the Circuit Trails Network and East Coast Greenway while narrowing a gap between the Cobbs Creek Trail and the Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. To learn more about how this project fits into the trail network please visit DVRPC’s Circuit Trails Map.
Traffic Safety Improvement
This section of Island Avenue is identified as part of Philadelphia’s High Injury Network, the 12% of city streets where 80% of severe traffic crashes occur. This project is part of the Department of Streets’ commitment to the City’s Vision Zero Program and our shared goal to program traffic safety improvements on every mile of the High Injury Network.
