Mayor Cherelle L. Parker to Utilize Grant to Expand Summer Meals and Nutrition Access

PHILADELPHIA — The City of Philadelphia has been selected as an inaugural recipient of the Mayor’s Alliance Action Fund to End Childhood Hunger, a national grant initiative led by the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger and supported by Dollar Tree. The initiative is announced in partnership with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. Philadelphia will receive $25,000 to support local efforts to combat childhood hunger and strengthen family economic mobility.

No child in Philadelphia should ever have to wonder where their next meal is coming from,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “This grant allows us to take targeted, local action to fight childhood hunger and ensure families can access nutritious meals year-round. By strengthening summer meals outreach and participation in programs like Summer EBT, we are meeting families where they are, and delivering real solutions that make a difference.”

Nearly one in three youth in Philadelphia County live in households experiencing food insecurity. During the summer months, when school-based meals are unavailable, many families face even greater challenges accessing consistent, nutritious food. Investments in summer nutrition programs help ensure children remain healthy, engaged, and ready to learn.

“At Dollar Tree, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and that begins with reliable access to nutritious food,” said Jennifer Silberman, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer. “We’re proud to support the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger and to help launch the inaugural Mayors Action Fund, which empowers mayors across the country to take bold, local action against hunger. Through our partnership with the Mayors Alliance and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, we are working to build more resilient, equitable communities — one meal, one city, and one child at a time.”

The Mayors’ Alliance brings together more than 550 mayors nationwide to advance local solutions that address childhood hunger. The Mayor’s Alliance Action Fund is in its inaugural year, and with support from Dollar Tree, is designed to fund mayor-led initiatives that reflect the unique needs of their communities.

At a time of mounting food costs and economic uncertainty for families, the Mayors Action Fund is a vital investment in local, community-driven solutions,” said Aaron Goldstein, senior manager of Local Government Relations at Share Our Strength. By supporting the work of visionary mayors like Cherelle L. Parker, these grants are another tool to help families and children access the resources they need to thrive.”
