Over the last three months, I had the privilege of participating in the Elevate Leadership Excellence (ELE) program. The leadership program was facilitated by Dr. Wendell Jackson and the Office of Talent and Employee Success (OTES) team, and the curriculum is designed to offer leadership development opportunities across the City’s workforce. The program helps City employees grow their emotional intelligence, improve their ability to facilitate hard conversations, and put leadership skills into practice.

As the Culture and Communications Specialist in the Employee Engagement, Infrastructure, and Operations Unit (EEIO), I wasn’t sure how a leadership class would impact me. Through this experience I gained a deeper understanding of the unique role I play in the City. My work touches many people and departments, and I now feel better equipped to ensure employees feel seen, heard, and valued. I have more confidence in identifying gaps in support and leading the organization toward being an employer of choice.

I had the chance to learn alongside colleagues from many departments including Commerce, Law, Fire, Fleet Services, Office of Information and Technology, Licenses & Inspections, and more. Each department brought unique experiences and stories that helped me grow my perspective and discover new ways to collaborate and support others.

I am grateful for the guidance and support of the Certified Adjunct Trainers (CATs), and Dr. Wendell Jackson. ELE was such a meaningful experience, and I will carry lessons learned into my work moving forward. This program strengthened my ability to contribute as a leader in my role and make a lasting impact on the culture of the City of Philadelphia.
