World Food Day commemorates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
On October 16, 2025, World Food Day celebrations in the United States will include the World Food Day Convoy featuring mass donations by more than 20 companies, along with organized runs, walks, and bike rides.
Here in Philadelphia, in-person or virtual, World Food Day-themed events are happening on or around the special day. These include Temple University’s World Food Day Festival, Moonstone Arts Center, The Discovery Center, and more.
About the Food and Agriculture Organization
FAO was founded after World War II, a time when agricultural systems across the globe were devastated and millions of people were starving. Since then, more than 130 countries across multiple disciplines have continued to collaborate to fight food insecurity and promote healthy outcomes for vulnerable populations.
FAO has claimed many successes throughout its history, including increasing food production and regulating food trade and fisheries. Some of its accomplishments include:
- The Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
- The Codex Alimentarius
- Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries
- Committee on World Food Security
- The Green Revolution in Asia
- Mobilization Against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean

What you can do to reduce food insecurity here at home.
Regardless of who you are — whether you’re a scientist, farmer, academician, chef, a business, or nonprofit, you can help fight food insecurity. Some effective ways include reducing food waste and supporting small-scale producers and family farmers, among other actions.
Everyone can make a difference, big or small, on World Food Day and every day.
