August is National Breastfeeding Month, and the City of Philadelphia just made it easier for nursing parents to find a private place to pump breast milk in various locations across the city.
If you’re a breastfeeding or pumping parent, you know how hard it can be to find a clean and comfortable space. That’s why the City has launched a new Lactation Spaces Finder App!
This mobile website helps you find lactation spaces, private, safe, and clean areas where parents can pump or breastfeed, provided by the City of Philadelphia. These spaces are not bathrooms, and they are made to help parents feel comfortable and supported.
Why This Matters:
In 2022, the PUMP Act became a national law. It says most workers have the right to take breaks and use a private space (not a bathroom) to pump milk at work. Philadelphia wanted to do even more to help. In 2023, City Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson introduced a local law that says all City departments must create lactation spaces in City buildings. These spaces are for City workers and, when possible, for the public too.
What the App Does
The Lactation Spaces Finder App is free and easy to use. You can:
- See a map of lactation spaces across the city
- See what’s inside each space (like seating, privacy, and outlets)
- Filter results by room type or optional amenities preferred by the user
- See who to contact to access or schedule time to use the space
You can use this tool whether you’re at work, running errands, or just out and about in Philly.
Supporting Parents, Families, and Children
City leaders, health workers, and community members came together to launch this new tool because we believe supporting nursing parents helps all of us. The Lactation Space Finder App is one of many resources the City has for new and lactating parents. Along with the programs and services offered through the Philly Loves Families initiative we are working across the City to support parents and children.
