City of Philadelphia Announces Implementation of New Traffic Pattern on 47th Street to Begin Monday, August 11

Temporary day time road closures and the new traffic pattern will be in effect immediately as blocks are completed and reopened

PHILADELPHIA – The City of Philadelphia Department of Streets announced temporary daytime road closures for line striping and traffic sign work to implement the new one-way configuration.

Starting Monday, August 11:

  • Department of Streets Highway Division crews will conduct line striping work on 47th Street between Chestnut Street and Kingsessing Avenue.
  • Work will begin around 9 a.m. starting on the block between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. The crews will continue south block by block with temporary daytime closures.
  • The new one-way traffic signs are already in place and will be uncovered as blocks are reopened.
  • As work is completed and individual blocks are reopened, the new traffic configuration will be in effect immediately. Please follow all new lane markings and traffic signs.
  • Following the line striping work, Department of Streets Sign Shop crews will update other traffic signs, including parking regulations.

The Department of Streets asks everyone traveling near roadwork to slow down, pay attention, and follow all detours and directions.

Following public outreach conducted by the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems, Department of Streets, and Councilmember Gauthier’s Office, the new layout on 47th Street from Chestnut Street to Kingsessing Avenue includes:

  • One-way northbound lane for people driving
  • Parking-separated southbound bike lane on the west side of the street
  • Addition of new speed tables
  • Parking on both west and east sides of 47th
  • Addition of new loading zones
  • Two new all-way stop intersections (at Warrington Avenue and Windsor Street)

These changes improve traffic safety by reducing the overall complexity of the roadway, making travel more consistent for drivers, shortening the distance for people crossing 47th, and adding a parking separated bike lane for people biking.

The 47th Street bike lane will serve as the southbound companion to the northbound bike lane on 48th Street.
