The City of Philadelphia Department of Streets Announces Construction Detours for Market Street
Westbound lane closure to last up to 3 months with sections reopening as work is completed.
PHILADELPHIA – The Department of Streets announces partial closures and detours to enable sidewalk and roadway construction work on Market Street between Front Street and 6th Street in Old City. Starting Monday, August 4th, the following changes will be in effect:
- The westbound lane of Market Street from 2nd Street to 6th Street will be closed, with westbound traffic detoured to Arch Street.
- Eastbound traffic will be maintained with two lanes on Market Street from 6th Street to 5th Street, then one lane from 5th Street to Front Street.
- Access to all businesses and residences will be maintained throughout construction.
- Temporary loading/delivery areas will be provided on Market Street and nearby cross streets as space allows depending on the location of work areas and material staging.
- SEPTA L Stations at 2nd and 5th Streets will remain open with temporary elevator and staircase closures.
- SEPTA bus stops on Market Street and nearby cross streets may be affected by the closure. Please look for posted signage and check septa.org/alerts for updates.
- The Navy Yard Shuttle will stop at 6th and Market. Please check navyyard.org for updates.
The partial closure and detour will be in place for up to 3 months. As work is completed, construction fences may be removed and sidewalk space or vehicle lanes re-opened.
This detour is being utilized for the construction of new curbs, sidewalks, ADA ramps, a sidewalk-level bike lane, and bus stop bump outs. Additionally, electrical and fiber optic work will be conducted to prepare for new traffic signals.
