Commerce Director oversees business attraction and retention, local growth, access to capacity building and capital, and neighborhood economic growth
PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Parker announced the appointment of Karen Fegely as the Acting Commerce Director for the City of Philadelphia. In this important role, Fegely will oversee all aspects of the Commerce Department, which includes economic development initiatives, business support services, and key strategic policies designed to foster inclusive economic growth across the city. The appointment was effective May 1, 2025, and follows the departure of former Commerce Director Alba Martinez.
As a part of the leadership team within the Commerce Department, Karen Fegely has played an instrumental role in the Office of Policy and Strategic Initiatives. She is dedicated to engaging the business community, economic development partners, and elected officials, driving efforts to create legislation and communications that promote equitable growth. Her team is currently leading Mayor Parker’s PHL Open for Business initiative, which aims to streamline services and enhance support for businesses throughout Philadelphia.

Fegely has a strong background in public service, having previously directed the Commerce Department’s Office of Neighborhood Economic Development and Business Services. In that capacity, she successfully implemented community development projects and wealth-building programs while providing direct assistance to small businesses. With over 20 years of experience across public and private sectors, she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to strengthening economic opportunities within marginalized communities.
The administration will continue to provide updates on the transition at the Commerce Department, including a comprehensive search for a permanent Commerce Director.
