Each year, Philadelphia Parks & Rec hosts 101 after school programs. On October 26, 2023, we’ll celebrate the importance of these programs as part of the 24th annual Lights On Afterschool campaign.

AfterSchool Alliance organizes the nationwide rally for afterschool programs. It shines a light on the ways afterschool programs support the well-being of young people. 8,000 events will take place across the country. In Philadelphia, after school youth at Bridesburg Recreation Center will get crafty. They’ll paint, color, decorate, and fly “Lights On” kites.

Stephanie Gradel coordinates Parks & Rec’s after school programs. She said the programs provide a daily safe haven for the city’s youth. They allow youth to play, learn, grow and make new friends. Children receive free meals, homework time, and lots of structured fun. This includes activities, games, contests and much more. All this while being looked after by our friendly, caring staff.

Parks & Rec’s trained and vetted staff focus on these core areas:

  • Sports, athletics, and games.
  • Environmental education and outdoor activities.
  • Arts – creative, performing, and visual.
  • Reading and STEM.
  • Culture and community awareness.
  • Health and wellness.

The after school programs run Monday to Friday from school dismissal time to 6 p.m.
