PHILADELPHIA — Today, Mayor Jim Kenney issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, affording a public business the right to refuse service to same-sex couples.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision to put prejudice before equality undermines long-fought non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and same-sex couples. This decision provides a green light for businesses–whose services to the public should be equally open to all–to discriminate against someone simply because of who they are or who they love. Over many decades our country has made important, hard-won progress toward an equitable and just society – and today’s ruling is a devastating step backward in this ongoing pursuit. The City of Philadelphia remains committed to ensuring fair treatment and opportunity for all people, including our LGBTQ communities, and urges all businesses and institutions to maintain this standard.”
