PHILADELPHIA – The Streets Department will kick off its paving season on five major thoroughfares beginning Tuesday night May 18th, announced Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams. There will be temporary street closures and parking restrictions to accommodate street resurfacing on the following streets:

  • Windrim Avenue from Wayne Avenue to Fisher Avenue (35th Police District)
  • Presidential Blvd/Neil Dr/Falls Road from City Avenue to Falls Bridge (19th and 16th Police Districts)
  • MLK Drive from Falls Bridge to Art Museum (16th Police District)
  • Spruce Street from 63rd Street to South Street/Convention Avenue (18th Police District)
  • 34th Street from Walnut Street to Spruce Street (18th Police District)

The resurfacing work for these streets is expected to be completed by mid-June.  Work will be completed in three separate phases – street milling, the adjustment of manhole covers and resetting of utility boxes, and final paving – which will take place in separate activities over the course of the next several weeks.

Operations for the milling work (removal of old asphalt) will be performed during the overnight hours between 7PM and 6AM.  Milling of each street segment is expected to last approximately 1-2 nights per street. Work for adjusting manhole covers and resetting utility boxes will be scheduled during the day between the hours of 7AM and 4PM and is expected to last approximately one week per street. Lastly, operations for the final paving will be performed by the contractor during the overnight hours between 7PM and 6AM.  The final paving of each street segment is expected to last approximately 1-2 nights per street.

To complete the work, residents should expect parking restrictions.  Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity.  Residents are urged to move their cars from the work sites when temporary ‘No Parking’ signs are posted, so that vehicles are not towed.  In the event a car is towed, please contact your local Police District to determine its location.  Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling around the work areas.

This work is being completed by James J. Anderson Construction Co, Inc., and is part of the Citywide Resurfacing CW108 project.  The project is being financed with Federal and City funding.

The Streets Department thanks the residents in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project. Residents are asked not to approach employees or contractors for information as they practice social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
