We are only one month into 2020 but the Office of the City Representative has been in full swing doing what we do best – repping Philly!
We started off the year by saying farewell to our beautiful City of Philadelphia holiday tree. The tree was lit in a majestic way during the City of Philadelphia Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration on December 4, 2019 and was the glowing center piece of Center City until it was removed and recycled on January 7, 2020.
During January, our very own City Representative, Sheila Hess, also made several public appearances on behalf of the City at various city-wide events. The first of these was the opening and ribbon cutting of the new Wawa store at 16th and Ranstead.
At the event, Wawa, Welcome America and Mayor Jim Kenney made the exciting announcement that the 2020 Welcome America Festival will be held over eight days from June 27 to July 4, 2020, so stay tuned to our blog over the coming months for more information on the festival and other July 4th activities.
Other appearances by the City Representative included the Project Home launch of “Keystone Connection to Wellness”, a community health program in North Philadelphia; and a ribbon cutting for the opening of the largest Wonderspaces location to date, in Philadelphia’s very own Fashion District.
Our Philadelphia Honors Diversity Flag Raising Program also kicked off on January 13, as we celebrated the country of South Korea with the first of our many Flag Raising Ceremonies. The event was attended by Councilman David Oh, Congressman Andy Kim and many other officials and guests who proudly represent their South Korean heritage.
So, what’s in store for February?
Coming up on February 26 is the 50th anniversary of PAL Day at City Hall. The annual event is one that provides Philadelphia’s youth with the opportunity to shadow some of the City of Philadelphia’s representatives, including Mayor Jim Kenney. Through the initiative the students learn valuable skills for their future and put them on the path for success.
