PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Jim Kenney and Stephanie Reid, Executive Director of Philly Counts 2020, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the addition of a question about citizenship status to the 2020 Census:
“While the ultimate impact of today’s Supreme Court ruling is not yet clear, we are encouraged that at least some of the justices appear to share the concerns that many Americans have regarding the intent and reasoning behind the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship status question to the census for the first time since 1950.
“We remain concerned about how a question on citizenship status could negatively impact our city, and the country, for generations to come. We know that this question could add significant barriers to the 2020 Census.
“Our team will continue to work every day in the lead up to the 2020 Census to ensure that every Philadelphia resident is counted—regardless of their citizenship status, or any other part of their identity. And we are hopeful that the continuation of these cases in District Courts will result in the rejection of any new, contrived reasoning from the Trump administration as they attempt to push through a question that is aimed at suppressing full participation of immigrants across the country.”
