On Monday, thousands of Philadelphians celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy through service in their community. Here are some ways students, educators, and partners gave back at Community Schools!

At F.S. Edmonds Elementary School:

Over 200 YouthBuild Philly students, staff, and supporters gave back by painting this elementary school’s gym, lunchroom, and hallways. Check out their amazing work, which will support student learning and attendance all year long!

Meanwhile, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Edmonds students went to Dream Camp at Villanova University.

At Edward Gideon Elementary School:

Dozens of community members attended Wellness Day at Edward Gideon Elementary School, in spite of freezing temperatures.

Gideon Coordinator Greg Wright organized Wellness Day to promote well-being in the school community. Activities included healing circles, group trauma conversations, art workshops, parent workshops, and yoga.

At South Philadelphia High School:

Many of this school’s partners joined forces for beautification projects. Volunteers from LoMo Civic Association, SEAMAAC, Bethanna, Starbucks, City Life Philly, and members of Philadelphia Police Department’s 3rd District pitched in to paint mini murals and build small libraries throughout the school.

At George Washington High School:

Volunteers from College Possible and Proclamation Community Church focused on various painting and cleanup project throughout the school, and organized the school’s food pantry.

Student service was also in full swing. A student group called Phit Philly hosted a canned food drive, and the school’s Healthy Communities Interns led a courtyard cleanup project.

But that’s not all…

George Washington High School also opened its new family engagement room! The room will serve families and community members and host parent workshops, and features a closet with free backpacks and school supplies.

What an inspiring day! We are proud of the work what our partnerships accomplish for students and communities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and every day!
