Kat Krohn, Community Citizenship and Outreach VISTA at the Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA), shares seven reasons why you should consider serving with AmeriCorps VISTA in Philadelphia.

  1. Philadelphia’s history will inspire you. Philadelphia is home to many historic places and events. The Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia’s very own Independence Hall. We’ve made American history as the first planned city and home to the first university and zoo in the United States. Independence Hall
  2. Philly food is hard to beat. With fantastic restaurants and fresh produce options, Philadelphia has amazing food. Events like Restaurant Week and Center City Sips provide great opportunities for trying new restaurants. Philadelphia also has plenty of neighborhood options for fresh, affordable groceries. Many neighborhoods even host local farmers markets that accept SNAP food benefits. Man making pasta in a store window.
  3. There are plenty of parks to explore. Did you know that Philadelphia has a massive urban park system? Philadelphia’s parks provide plenty of space to walk, run, hike, and bike through nature. The Schuylkill River Trail is a personal favorite place of mine (and many other Philadelphians) for walking and running!Directional sign for Boxer's Trail.
  4. We’ve got world-class museums. You’ve probably seen the Art Museum’s steps, but have you checked out what’s inside? Philadelphia is home to a variety of art, science, and history museums. Many offer monthly or weekly “Pay-What-You-Wish” days and discounts for low-income ACCESS-card holders. Philadelphia Museum of Art
  5. Philadelphia can fit your VISTA budget. Philadelphia has affordable housing options and plenty of free events. Serve Philadelphia VISTA members created a guide to help new members navigate life in Philly.Aerial view of Center City Philadelphia
  6. There’s no need for a car. With public transit, bike lanes, and walkable streets, you can get around Philly without a car!  All Serve Philadelphia VISTA members receive a monthly transit pass that makes it easy to commute and explore. Philadelphia also has Indego—an affordable bike share system across the city. Route 57 SEPTA bus in the snow.
  7. You’ll stay for the people. Philadelphia is a diverse city of passionate people. From neighborhood pride to Super Bowl spirit, I’m inspired by the way people in Philadelphia come together to support one another. You should come experience it for yourself.
