In addition to calling for further investigation of the Morris case by state and federal authorities, the commission made several recommendations for additional diversity training of police.

COMMISSION JOINS OPEN DATA INTIATIVE

Today the Commission answered the challenge of Mayor Nutter's Open Data Initiative (Executive Order 1-12) by taking the first steps in providing additional transparency around the police complaints process. Four years of our complaint data is posted at OpenDataPhilly, and will be updated monthly. We encourage the public, academics, other government agencies and data developers to download, map and correlate this data with other information to shed light on the variety of factors leading to complaints against police.

The Police Advisory Commission is the official civilian oversight agency of the City of Philadelphia for the Philadelphia Police Department. The general mission of the Commission is to improve the relationship between the police department and the community. The Commission, in its diversity of composition and in its functioning, is intended to represent the external point of view of the Philadelphia citizenry.

The Commission is authorized by Executive Order 8-93  to conduct investigations of individual citizen complaints of police misconduct, and/or studies of police department policies, procedures or practices. Findings and recommendations made by the Commission are forwarded directly to the Mayor, the City Managing Director and the Police Commissioner for their review and appropriate action.
