PHILADELPHIA-  Philadelphia Department of Prisons (PDP) and New Lease on Life (NLOL) have assisted national animal rescue programs by accepting two dogs that were saved from the floods that came subsequent to Hurricane Irma. Renamed Cosmo and Aster, the dogs will join 6 other local rescues for NLOL and PDP’s 19th class.

NLOL rescues dogs from local shelters by pairing them with suitable inmate trainers who will socialize the animals while they are going through a prion rehabilitation program that provides educational, vocational, and life skill services.  The NLOL /PDP program is one of the most successful as it boasts an average 15% recidivation rate compared to the city’s normal average of approximately 60%.

At the end of the 13 week program, the dogs will be adopted by members of the community and the inmate trainers will be prepared to return to our communities equipped with new skills and a new outlook.
