During a work stoppage, the Department of Sanitation will operate in a modified capacity. Effective Tuesday, July 1 there will be no curbside trash and recycling collections. There will be temporary, organized locations where residents can drop-off trash and recycling. Read on to learn about where to bring your trash, how you can help reduce trash issues during the work stoppage, and other service impacts.
Where to go
Trash
Residents can dispose of trash at the following locations. You can start dropping materials off at these locations beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1. From that point on, they’ll open at 6 a.m. for drop-offs.
- Six Sanitation Convenience Centers, open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Over 60 temporary drop-off sites, open Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Residents should bring their materials to drop off sites on their regular trash day.
- You can bring up to eight (8) bags of trash.
- Loose trash and bulk items are NOT accepted.
Recycling
- Recyclable materials will only be accepted at the Sanitation Convenience Centers.
- Please hold recyclable materials as long as possible. We are prioritizing trash disposal due to health and safety concerns.
How you can help
Here are some things you can do to help the drop-off process go more smoothly and limit issues with trash during the work stoppage:
- Don’t place trash or recycling out of for curbside collection.
- Don’t illegally dump trash and other materials.
- Bring your trash and recycling to a drop-off site on your regular collection day.
- Hold your recycling at home as long as possible so that we can prioritize disposing of trash.
- Help your neighbors without access to transportation with drop-offs.
- Use your in-sink garbage disposal to get rid of food scraps, if you have access to one.
- Limit projects, like construction and DIY projects, that create a lot of trash.
- Bring bulky items to a Sanitation Convenience Center.
- Compost food and yard waste, if possible.
