Today, the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) corrected the public information about the fatal shooting of Eddie Irizarry on August 14, 2023. The Citizens Police Oversight Commission (CPOC) expects a fair, impartial criminal investigation by the PPD, in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office. Police officers must be held accountable for misconduct, up to and including criminal charges, if warranted.
CPOC was immediately alerted and was present at the scene of the shooting investigation, the 100 block of East Willard Street, as the investigation was initiated. CPOC is independently monitoring the PPD investigation in real-time. PPD has thus far been receptive to oversight in this case. As this situation develops, CPOC will continue to monitor the investigation into this officer’s conduct and PPD’s response to this incident.
CPOC is an independent oversight agency, tasked with addressing problems or failures in the system of holding police officers accountable for misconduct. We will update the public accordingly.
