On July 3rd, a mass shooting took place in the Kingsessing section of Southwest Philadelphia. Though details and information are still emerging, early reports indicate the alleged gunman killed four and wounded another four individuals, several of them children. Police were able to capture the gunman, who had been wearing a bulletproof tactical-style vest and was in possession of a police scanner and multiple firearms. There have also been reports that the alleged gunman had been agitated and exhibited erratic behavior in the days prior to the incident.
As events have continued to unfold, it appears that the alleged gunman had an additional victim, shot on Sunday, July 2nd, several hours before the mass shooting on July 3rd. This victim’s death was not originally connected to the mass shooting until after new information was received by the Philadelphia Police Department. This new information indicated that after a 911 call, police were sent to the wrong address due to miscommunication from 911 dispatch. This left the community and the police unaware of this event until after the shooting on July 3rd.
This event has directly impacted many members of the community. Incidents like this reinforce the need for discussions and solutions surrounding gun violence and mental health.
