Program Name: Airport Improvement Program
Point of Contact: Mark Gale, Acting Director of Aviation
In April, PHL was awarded $5.7 million of ARRA funds through the Airport Improvement Program administered by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is an economic engine for the entire region. The 600 daily departures and 33,000 jobs at PHL require its infrastructure to be in a state of good repair.
These funds will be leveraged with $11.3 million of other federal and Airport funds to rehabilitate the Airport’s longest runway 9R/27L. It is important to note that the lack of adequate funding has hindered the progress of this project, which could have been further deferred without the Recovery Act Funding.
The project was awarded in August to James J Anderson Construction. Anderson is headquartered in Philadelphia. Prep work has begun and the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010. The project has a 16 percent established goal for DBE participation. Full job creation reports will be available once the project is underway.
