Compliance deadlines

These are deadlines to comply with the citywide Building Energy Performance Program.

Owners of non-residential buildings 50,000 sq. ft. and larger are required to submit tune-up reports, plans, and certifications every five years. The compliance schedule is based on the size of the building. For example, buildings over 200,000 square feet submitted reports for the first time in 2021 and will have to again in 2026, 2031, and so forth.

Buildings must comply with the current cycle of the program according to this schedule:

Buildings over 200,000 sq. ft. in 2026.
Buildings between 100,000 and 200,000 sq. ft. in 2027.
Buildings between 70,000 and 100,000 sq. ft. in 2028.
Buildings between 50,000 and 70,000 sq. ft. in 2029.

If you’ve missed a compliance deadline, you must pay a $2,000 fine and will still need to submit a report or certification.

2026

January 5, 2026

First day to submit Alternative Compliance Plans for buildings over 200,000 sq. ft.

April 3, 2026

First day to certify as High Performance, file for an exemption, or request an extension for buildings over 200,000 sq. ft.

September 30, 2026

Deadline to submit Tune-up report or High Performance report for buildings over 200,000 sq. ft.
Tune-up specialists submitting 2026 reports must be certified by this date.

2027

January 4, 2027

First day to submit Alternative Compliance Plans for buildings 100,000–200,000 sq. ft.

April 5, 2027

First day to certify as High Performance, file for an exemption, or request an extension for 100,000–200,000 sq. ft. buildings.

September 30, 2027

Deadline to submit Tune-up report or High Performance report for 100,000–200,000 sq. ft. buildings.
Tune-up specialists submitting 2027 reports must be certified by this date.

2028

January 6, 2028

First day to submit Alternative Compliance Plans for 70,000–100,000 sq. ft. buildings.

April 5, 2028

First day to certify as High Performance, file for an exemption, or request an extension for 70,000–100,000 sq. ft. buildings.

October 2, 2028

Deadline to submit Tune-up report or High Performance report for 70,000–100,000 sq. ft. buildings.
Tune-up specialists submitting 2028 reports must be certified by this date.

2029

January 4, 2029

First day to submit Alternative Compliance Plans for 50,000–70,000 sq. ft. buildings.

April 4, 2029

First day to certify as High Performance, file for an exemption, or request an extension for 50,000–70,000 sq. ft. buildings.

October 1, 2029

Deadline to submit Tune-up report or High Performance report for 50,000–70,000 sq. ft. buildings.
Tune-up specialists submitting 2029 reports must be certified by this date.

2030

There are no compliance deadlines this year.
