Agency Function

The function of the Board is to hear and decide upon appeals for exceptions to zoning ordinance provisions and to authorize such variances if not contrary to the public interest.

Agency History

The Board was created by an ordinance of August 10, 1933, and composed of five mayoral appointees. Upon the adoption of the City Charter of 1951 the Board was made a departmental board of the Department of Licenses and Inspections, and the Department's Commissioner was added to it.
