Agency History

The Philadelphia Civil Defense Council was organized in January 1952 with the Mayor as Director. It was merged with the Fire Department on 14 February 1972 and renamed the Office of Emergency Preparedness. The Fire Commissioner exercises direct jurisdiction over this unit.
