Agency History

Court established by an Act of March 30, 1811, to share the function of a civil court with the Court of Common Pleas in order to relieve the pressure of business on that court. The court's prothonotary was, like the clerks of other courts, an appointee of the governor until 1838 when the office was made popularly elective for a term of three years. The court, and the office of its prothonotary, was abolished by provisions of the State Constitution of 1873 and the county's entire civil jurisdiction returned to the Court of Common Pleas.
