Program Overview
The “Summer in the City” High School Internship Program with the City of Philadelphia municipal government is a paid six-week internship beginning on Monday, July 1st and ending on Friday, August 9th. As a participating employer with the Philadelphia Youth Network’s WorkReady Summer Internship Program, the City of Philadelphia municipal government will hire 100 students to work in various municipal placements for the duration of the internship term. Students will have the opportunity to be placed in a variety of different fields as part of the internship, including health, human services, finance, and law - just to name a few.
As part of the WorkReady Summer Internship Program, students are required to spend 16-hours per week in an internship with a City department or office and an additional four hours each Friday in workplace skill and leadership development training. Interns will also be required to participate in four hours of community-oriented work every two weeks as part of their total weekly hours. This work will be coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service. In addition, students will attend a College and Career Fair hosted by the City of Philadelphia.
Interns will also be required to attend an Orientation through WorkReady’s summer internships. Interns working specifically with the City municipal government are also required to attend the City’s one-day internship Orientation on their first day. The Orientation includes a welcome ceremony with Mayor Michael Nutter, team-building activities, and information about working in City municipal government.

Interns will be placed in various departments and offices throughout the City of Philadelphia government based upon their skills and interests and will assist city staff on a variety of projects and tasks. Some of the participating departments for the 2013 “Summer in the City” High School Internship Program include:
- Department of Behavioral Health/Intellectual DisAbility Services
- Commerce Department
- Free Library of Philadelphia
- Health Department
- Human Resources
- Law Department
- Mayor’s Office
- Office of Licenses & Inspections
- Office of Supportive Housing
- Philadelphia Fire Department
- Philadelphia Police Department
- Philadelphia Prisons System
- Revenue Department
The Internship Program also offers participants the opportunity to learn about various careers in municipal government and post-secondary options upon their graduation from high school through additional events held during the internship term.
Interns will receive an hourly wage for their internship. All students are administered a payroll debit card by the Philadelphia Youth Network.
How to Apply
Potential applicants for the “Summer in the City” High School Internship Program must be:
- Be a Philadelphia resident
- A junior through senior in high school as of September 2013 OR a Senior that has graduated in May 2013. Current college students will not be considered.
- Able to commit to 20 hours per week for 6 weeks from early July 2013 to mid-August 2013.
In order to apply for the “Summer in the City” High School Internship Program with the City of Philadelphia, applicants must complete the Philadelphia Youth Network’s WorkReady application online by Friday, May 3rd.
The online application can be found here. To ensure your application is directed to the “Summer in the City” program, please type RCIT in the referral section. If you do not include this referral code on your application, it will NOT be directed to the “Summer in the City” program.
Enrollment Process
Upon receiving your completed application, the Philadelphia Youth Network will contact you to schedule an initial enrollment appointment. You will not be contacted for your enrollment appointment until a completed application is received by the May 3, 2013 deadline. Applicants for the “Summer in the City” program will be asked to attend an enrollment appointment on one of the following dates:

All enrollment appointments will be held between 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM, in the Municipal Services Building (1401 JFK Blvd), 16th Floor, Room X
Please prepare to have a valid photo ID, Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, and Working Permit or completed Work Permit application, in order to progress through the enrollment process. Without these documents, you will increase your enrollment wait time and may not be able to participate in the WorkReady Summer Internship Program. Selected applicants will be asked to participate in a formal interview with the City of Philadelphia the first week in June.
If you have not completed the enrollment process with the Philadelphia Youth Network by the time of these interviews, you will not be able to participate in the second round of interviews for the “Summer in the City” program with the City of Philadelphia municipal government.
Applicants will be notified of their selection to the internship by mid June 2013.
Please note that applicants who are not selected to participate in the “Summer in the City” High School Internship Program with City municipal government may be considered for an internship with another company participating in WorkReady’s summer internships; however, placement is not guaranteed.
