Philadelphia City Scholarship Program

Encouraging Philadelphia students to pursue higher education by providing $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors.


Each year, the Philadelphia City Scholarship Program awards around 50 scholarships to local high school seniors. Recipients get $1,000 each academic year for four consecutive years of enrollment.

If you apply, the review committee will consider your:

  • High school grades.
  • Extracurricular activities.
  • Leadership potential.
  • Writing ability.
  • Financial need, as described in your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) report.

All City Scholarship recipients must attend bachelor’s degree programs at local colleges or universities.


To qualify for the Philadelphia City Scholarship, you and your parent or legal guardian must live in Philadelphia. You must also:

  • Be a high school senior.
  • Attend a school in one of the following counties:
    • Bucks County.
    • Chester County.
    • Delaware County.
    • Montgomery County.
    • Philadelphia County.
  • Have a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
  • Intend to get a bachelor’s degree as a full-time student.

You must apply to attend a four-year college or university in one of the counties mentioned above. Your school of choice must be accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Students who receive the Mayor's Scholarship are not eligible to receive the Philadelphia City Scholarship.


You can apply online for the Philadelphia City Scholarship. Your guidance counselor should be able to help you gather the information you need.

This year’s applications are due March 1, 2020.

If you’re selected for a scholarship, the funds will be sent directly to your college. Each summer, you’ll need to renew your award and confirm that you meet the program’s minimum requirements.
