LIFEGUARD I

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is recreation work safeguarding and performing basic instructions with participants in aquatic activities at a municipal swimming pool.  Employees are hired on a temporary basis and may be required to work during one of two shifts.

            Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level lifeguard.  Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with detailed instructions.  The employee instructs participants in swimming technique and proper use of pool facilities.  Working conditions involve some undesirable elements and require light physical exertion.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Maintains surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas; assures order and adherence to safety regulations.

            Teaches swimming to organized groups; coaches groups in water show activities.

            Rescues bathers in distress; administers CPR and other first aid when necessary.

            May keep records of individual swimming progress; fills out standard accident report forms when necessary.

            Tests and maintains chlorine content standard in pool.

            Tests pH of water.

            Maintains cleanliness and safety of deck area by picking up trash and discarded objects.

            Must wear appropriate identification and uniforms.

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•water rescue methods and techniques.

•swimming strokes and aquatic techniques.

•first-aid principles and procedures.

•CPR principles and procedures.

 

SKILL IN:

 

•swimming, lifeguarding, first aid and CPR.

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•pass swimming test as required.

•teach basic aquatic skills to participants.

•exercise tact and judgment in maintaining order and discipline, and in enforcing pool regulations.

•maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the public.

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 

Education equivalent to completion of a standard high school.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

            Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate, or National YWCA/YMCA Lifesaver certificate and First Aid certificate from American Red Cross or Coyne First Aid and CPR certificate from American Red Cross or Coyne First Aid or American Heart Association.
