WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR 2

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

This is supervisory water safety instructional and recreational work. Employees in this class supervise a staff of lower level instructors and lifeguards engaged in teaching safe swimming and other water recreational activities to a variety of pool users, including the physically and mentally handicapped. Work requires participating with others in the implementation of aquatic activities at a municipal pool. Work is distinguished from the lower level in this series by the participation in program development, course content, and supervision. Working conditions involve some disagreeable aspects and light physical effort. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

 

·       The positions in this class must be located in Fairmount Park or the Recreation Department

·       The employees in this class must supervise a staff of lower level Water Safety Instructors and lifeguards engaged in teaching safe swimming and other water recreational activities to a variety of pool users, including the physically and mentally handicapped.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

Plans and develops a comprehensive aquatics program for an assigned facility; assigns and reviews the work of lower level Water Safety Instructors and lifeguards; schedules pool activities.

Schedules personnel for swimming meets; assures availability of necessary equipment or personnel not provided by meet directors; maintains meet records.

Instructs patrons of all ages and levels, including the physically and mentally handicapped, in swimming and skills necessary for safe aquatic recreation; prepares application forms and flyers to announce the proposed courses; maintains records of participation and team and individual swimming progress; awards certificates for completion of all levels of swimming instructions; offers and renders advice and assistance when requested; arranges Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR courses.

Maintains order and discipline at pool; observes and enforces safety precautions.

Rescues swimmers when necessary; administers CPR and other first aid techniques and procedures.

Makes chlorine and Ph tests, correcting chlorine content in pool when necessary; supervises cleaning of pools and locker areas as required.

Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 11/1985.)

 

EDUCATION

 

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND
EXPERIENCE

 

Three seasons of lifeguard experience which has involved responsibility for instructing others in the art of swimming.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate, a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor's Certificate, and a current certification required for lifeguarding including First Aid and CPR, at the time of application and during tenure of employment as a Water Safety Instructor 2.
