CAMP DIRECTOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is administrative work directing the operations of the City's resident youth camp. The employee in this class plans, organizes, coordinates and reviews all phases of the camp's operation, activities, and program. During the off season, the employee in this class serves as an assistant to the deputy commissioner in performing a variety of administrative and recreation functions, special projects, and community liaison activities. Work includes interacting with City officials, civic and church leaders, the general public, and the Board of Trustees of the resident youth camp. Work is performed under the direction of a Deputy Commissioner.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, organizes, reviews and coordinates the activities and programs of a resident youth camp, emphasizing swimming, boating, nature study and arts and crafts; evaluates activities to determine progress and problems of program, staff and campers; conducts weekly staff meetings; directs all administrative work incidental to camper transportation, arrival, processing and departure.
- Recruits, interviews and hires camp personnel; contacts schools, placement bureaus and camping associations to recruit camp personnel; prepares consultant contracts and camp personnel position specifications; organizes and conducts pre-camp staff training program.
- Recruits resident campers; contacts departmental facilities, community groups and organizations, and area elementary schools; visits facilities, clubs, churches, and schools to publicize the camp and the camping experience.
- Prepares requisitions for purchase of all food, materials, supplies and equipment necessary for proper operation and maintenance of the resident camp; prepares personal services requests for approval; controls petty cash fund for all emergency purchased; maintains necessary inventory records and expenditure control data.
- Recommends changes to the camp budget; reviews the operation of the camp office, infirmary, kitchen and maintenance staff; prepares memos, correspondence and daily camp status reports; prepares the annual reports to the Department of Recreation and the Board of Trustees; attends all meetings of the Board of Trustees.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, practices and methods of organization and planning of recreation, cultural, social and nature activities for resident youth camping program.
- the philosophy and objectives underlying a varied program of activities within a resident youth camp.
- the administrative principles and practices applicable to the planning, implementation, and operation of an organized youth camp.

- plan, schedule, organize and direct a complete program for a resident youth camp.
- supervise and train a group of subordinate personnel in the performance of varied activities within an organized youth camp program.

- present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
- establish and maintain effective working relations with participants, associates, and the general public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 2/1985.)
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university in the field of recreation or physical education.
- Four seasons of resident youth camp experience which has involved responsibilities for the planning and organization of varied cultural, social, nature and/or athletic activities within an organized youth camp program, two of which have been supervising and administering such activities.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Camp Director.
