LIFEGUARD II

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is supervisory recreation work carrying out a program of summer aquatic activities at a municipal swimming pool and scheduling the work of subordinate lifeguards and pool maintenance attendants.  Duties include responsibility for checking pool equipment and making verbal reports of conditions detrimental to the safe operation of the facility.  Employees are hired on a temporary basis and may be required to work during one of two shifts.

            Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior, involves some undesirable elements and requires light physical exertion.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Orients subordinate lifeguards to pool program and discipline; reviews lifeguards in teaching and guarding participants; schedules lifeguards and pool maintenance attendants for complete pool coverage and rotates positions on an assigned shift, oversees the pool and surrounding areas and maintains order and discipline.

            Interprets guidelines from established programs in a manner appropriate to the needs of patrons; prepares facilities and personnel for special events such as end-of-season carnivals, splash parties and family swims.

            Teaches swimming to organized groups.

            Rescues bathers in distress; administers CPR and other first aid when necessary.

            Keeps attendance records; fills out standard accident report forms when necessary.

            Keeps pH and chlorine records.

            Explains rules and regulations governing pool use to patrons.

            Must participate in at least one swim meet.

            Must wear appropriate identification and uniforms.

           Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•           water rescue methods and techniques.

•           swimming strokes and aquatic techniques.

•          first-aid principles and procedures.

•           CPR principles and procedures.

 

 

SKILL IN:

 

•           swimming, lifeguarding, CPR and first-aid.

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•           pass swimming test as required.

•           supervise the work of subordinate lifeguards and other pool personnel.

•           teach swimming to participants.

•           carry out a varied aquatic program at a municipal pool.

•           exercise tact and judgment in maintaining order and discipline, and in enforcing pool regulations.

•           maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the public.

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/97.)

 

            Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

            One season of lifeguard experience at a community or municipal pool and possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's certificate and/or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certificate and American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate or National YWCA/YMCA Lifesaver certificate; and First Aid certificate from American Red Cross or Coyne First Aid or American Heart Association.

            Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

            Two seasons of lifeguard experience at a community or municipal pool and possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate or National YWCA/YMCA Lifesaver certificate and First Aid certificate from American Red Cross or Coyne First Aid; and CPR certificate from American Red Cross or Coyne First Aid or American Heart Association.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.
