LIBRARY DIGITAL RESOURCE SPECIALIST

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

This is library patron service work providing assistance to and orienting library patrons in the access of public computers, laptops, tablets, e-readers and other technological resources that support and deliver library services, programs and materials. Employees in this class perform a variety of support services in assisting patrons in accessing the library’s digital resources. Work is performed in the neighborhood, regional and central library branches, on the Free Library’s Techmobile, community centers (Hot Spots), or other library service outlets. Employees in the class work under the direct supervision of a library supervisor.

                                                                                                               

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

 

Both Specialties

 

Provides assistance to the public and library patrons in the use of computers, tablets, e-readers and other technical resources; identifies patron needs by listening and asking relevant questions;  orients users to the Free Library’s Hot Spot/Techmobile and other digital library resources; assists the public in accessing the internet, internet based programs, research databases and mobile applications; assists library patrons in accessing library services on their home computers and personal mobile devices; trains, orients and instructs the public and library staff in groups or one-on-one in the use of library technologies, digital literacy and software programs; recommends and implements library programs regarding digital literacy; prepares reports documenting the training and use of technologies by the public for library, government and other funding agencies.

Maintains familiarity with relevant technological advancements; offers appropriate suggestions for program enhancement and library service delivery; assists with other technology and digital projects for the enhancement of library programs or services.

Drives the Techmobile to community events, recreation centers, schools and other events and locations as necessary; may resolve common and routine problems in accessing electronic library resources; secures the assistance of higher level information technology staff when necessary.

Performs related work as required.

 

Bilingual Specialty

 

Performs the duties mentioned above with members of a foreign language speaking community.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·         Computers, tablets, e-readers and their application in providing library services

·         Microsoft or iOS operating systems

·         Computer programs and mobile applications including Microsoft Office and internet browsers

·         Free Library website and research databases

·         The organization of and services provided by a large municipal library system

 

ABILITY TO:

 

·         Deliver formal and informal digital skills trainings to technology users of all competency levels.

·         Resolve common and routine errors accessing library resources on computers, printers, tablets, and e-readers.

·         Effectively communicate the role and importance of technology in acquiring information and developing life skills.

·         Learn and apply new and existing technology devices and software programs

·         Demonstrate how technology devices and software programs can enhance library service

·         Plan, develop, conduct, and evaluate training and development programs

·         Select and adapt available material and prepare original material for training needs

·         Maintain records and prepare written reports

·         Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees, outside agencies and the public

·         Understand and speak fluently and clearly in a designated foreign language (Bilingual Specialty)

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/19).

 

EDUCATION

 

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND
EXPERIENCE:

 

OPTION 1:

           

Two years of experience as a Library Assistant 1.

 

AND

 

Two years of experience as a Library Assistant 2 providing assistance to and orienting library patrons in the access of public computers, laptops, tablets, e-readers and other technological resources that support and deliver library services, programs and materials at a branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

 

OR

 

OPTION 2:

 

Four years of experience as a Library Assistant 1 providing assistance to and orienting library patrons in the access of public computers, laptops, tablets, e-readers and other technological resources that support and deliver library services, programs and materials at a branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

 

OR

 

OPTION 3:

 

            Completion of three years of community digital access experience which has included two terms of experience as an Afterschool Program Leader with the Free Library of Philadelphia with primary responsibility for educating and assisting the public in accessing Free Library HotSpots.

 

NOTE: 60 college credits from an accredited college or university with major course work in Information Technology, Information Science, Computer Science, Information Systems Management or a closely related field can be substituted for two years of experience.

 

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

 

Additional Requirement for the Bilingual Specialty

 

Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and clearly in a designated foreign language.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

             Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania during tenure of employment if required by work assignment.
