This is library patron service work supervising a large group of lower level library assistants and clerical personnel in a variety of reader and/or library material processing services, which may include supervising the receiving, sorting and dispensing of books and other library materials in a central bookstack. Scheduling, reviewing, and evaluating the work of subordinate staff and volunteers is important in the work as is resolving patron complaints and problems.
Employees in this class report to higher level librarian.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- library rules, procedures, and practices.

- the operation and care of a typewriter and computer entry devices.
ABILITY TO:
- supervise a large group of library assistants and other clerical personnel performing library reader service and materials processing work.
- interpret and explain library rules, procedures, and practices for subordinates and the public.
- enter and retrieve data on computer terminals.
- maintain records and prepare reports.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other library personnel, and the public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

- Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Four years of experience in providing reader services for library patrons or performing book processing procedures such as searching, accessioning, and on-line data entry.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE BILINGUAL SPECIALTY
- Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and clearly in a designated foreign language.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
