HORSESHOER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is full performance level work preparing, fitting and nailing horseshoes. Employees in this class prepare horses' hooves for shoeing and nail appropriately prepared horseshoes to them.
Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative supervisor. Assignments are stable in nature and performed in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions. Employees have controlling responsibility for completing assigned tasks. Work involves conditions which can be only partially controlled and requires moderate physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Removes worn out horseshoes and nails; pares, trims, smoothes and dresses the horse's hoof in preparation for shoeing.
- Heats, shapes, and forge-welds pre-formed horseshoes; nails shoe to horse's hoof and uses rasp on nail ends and hoof exterior to provide a smooth finish.
- Makes special corrective horseshoes from bar stock steel based on instructions from a veterinarian.
- Heats, hammers, straightens, forge-welds, and hardens stock iron and steel to make special tools such as pritchels, hoof spreaders, hoof picks, and other tools required for the horseshoeing trade.
- Heats, hammers, forge-welds, or welds with oxyacetylene welding tools to repair or make door hinges, horse trailer parts, stable accessories, and other special equipment; heats straightens, sharpens, and tempers pitchforks, rakes, and other standard tools.
- Drives a van equipped with an electric forge, acetylene welding tools, and shoeing supplies for use in shoeing horses at their patrol locations when necessary.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, materials, tools, and practices of the horseshoeing trade.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- the use of oxyacetylene welding tools for the welding of iron and steel objects.
SKILL IN:
- the care and use of tools, materials, and equipment of the horseshoeing trade and use of oxyacetylene welding tools.
ABILITY TO:
- control horses and to shoe them properly.
- follow oral and written instructions including prescriptions of the veterinarian.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 3/1977.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of the eighth school grade.
- Three years of experience learning the horseshoeing trade as either a helper or apprentice.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Horseshoer, if required by work assignment.
