BINDERY SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled and supervisory work directing the bindery operations of a large municipal library system. The employee in this class directs the activities of bindery workers, bookbinders and other employees engaged in the preparation, binding and finishing of library books and related materials. Work includes prioritizing and assigning work, maintaining appropriate records, and operating binding and related equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior. Work is preformed in an environment with some disagreeable aspects.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- This is a one position class located in the Bindery Shop, Free Library of Philadelphia.
- The employee must supervise bindery workers and direct all bindery activities of the Free Library.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Supervises the activities of a staff engaged in operating binding, microfilming and other related equipment; sets quality standards; schedules and assigns work; reviews completed work to ensure conformance to instructions and quality standards; evaluates performance of subordinate staff.
- Operates binding and related equipment as required; presses books; mounts and places prints and posters in acetate; stamps, affixes bar codes, and pockets finished volumes; sorts and places books in appropriate bins for shipping.
- Supervises and participates in special binding and repair operations such as those relating to rare and valuable books and manuscripts; instructs bookbinders in special binding techniques; trains new employees in all phases of bindery operations; prepares, conducts, narrates group tours; conducts book repair session at local libraries for staff.
- Maintains production records; requisitions materials, supplies and equipment; prepares reports on production; submits annual budget requests to superior for approval.
- Directs the clean-up and general maintenance of plant facilities; performs minor repairs on bindery equipment; contacts dealer representatives when major repairs are required.
- Performs related work a required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in all aspects of the bookbinding trade
- quality standards for production of all aspects of the bookbinding trade
- the operational hazards and safety precautions involved in all aspects of the bookbinding trade
- procedures and equipment used in a microfilming operation
SKILL IN:
- the application of library bookbinding methods and techniques
- the use and care of materials, tools and equipment used in all aspects of the bookbinding trade
ABILITY TO:
- supervise the work of a large group of full performance bookbinders, bindery workers and other employees engaged in preparing and binding books and performing related tasks
- maintain and make minor repairs to bookbinding machinery and related equipment
- maintain records and prepare statistical and narrative reports on the expenditures and production of the bindery operation
- project the annual needs and requirements for the materials and tools needed in the work
- make simple arithmetic computations
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/00.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Five years of experience learning and performing work in the bookbinding and finishing trades.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- One year of experience in library bookbinding at the full performance level.
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department, which has included the specific experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
